Digital Amateur Radio for Beginners

Beginning November 18, 2008 (Approximately 4 weeks)

Course Outline

1.    Introduction: What can you do once the radio and computer are interfaced?

2.    PC basics: recognize hardware, in/out ports,discuss how the system works.

3.    How the interface connects the radio to the computer.

4.    Basics of setup and operation of free software: Fldigi, Vbdigi, MMSSTV so that operator can send and receive text and images over radio.

5.    Assembling your station: choosing the right operating system, software, and setup details for specific radios and computers.

6.    The RF side of digital operating: FM is simple, SSB coping with noise, fading, multipath, and static.

7.    Troubleshooting and solving problems during operation. Recovering hung software, Using the waterfall as a diagnostic tool.

  • 7:00 PM Tuesdays and Thursdays

  • Technician license OK. Will use 2 Meter band.

  • May bring your own computer to configure it for digital operation

  • No charge for this class
